Power of Technology

technology
I love technology. I love having magic boxes that connect us to far off places. Here is where I give mad love to companies like Logitech, Samsung, HTC, Gateway, Apple, and Skype.

Several years ago, in the early days of Skype, we tried video chatting with my folks who were on DSL, not completely broadband. There was break-ups and stop-motion video. I knew someday the technology would catch-up, so I didn’t give up hope. We tried using a few mobile device apps during the past year to stay in touch, but again, sometimes the connection was great other times, the camera wasn’t up to par.

And then this year, things changed. We were able to get a clearer feed. I was able to chat with one of my friends who was a new mother. She hadn’t been able to leave the house much, but we were still able to talk and catch up as if she was in the room with me. Before we took our big trips, we made sure that we would have some connection, some way. When we were in Costa Rica, I was able to fire up my computer, connect to wi-fi, load up Skype and stay connected to dear ones back home. What a thrill it was to talk to our little ones from so far away and see that they were having a blast! I saw many of our Costa Rica schoolmates talking with their friends on Facetime or on Skype, too. I really enjoyed the time I had to write at breakfast at the little shop in Costa Rica. I also enjoyed talking to some of my most special people in that same shop! When Don and I traveled to Northern California with friends and our girls stayed back in SoCal with their grandparents (Hi Carol! Hi Mom! Hi Dad!), each night, they fired up Skype on their iPad and we connected to wi-fi to talk to them. So very far away, yet so close.

My girls have been sick this week. This is also the first full week of “normal” as we know it. Normal is where we all get up by 6:30AM. We all rush off to our schools/work, then we come home, eat dinner as a family, and then my husband goes to his part-time job (What, he has a second job? Yes, he does. You didn’t think that the sabbatical trips were free, did you? *grin*) while the girls and I clean up dinner (he and the girls prepare it) and do our night routine. He does have a few evenings off where we can enjoy it as a family, but this weekend, he and I are having a weekend date (thanks Mom & Z!!!), so he is working different days to maintain his hours. Needless to say, I was on the brink of a serious pity party in the evenings (hello, extrovert doesn’t do well alone). Since the girls had the nasty coughs, there were a couple of times where I had to sit quietly and do my best to revisit the magical memories made in the past few months. I held my little blessings tightly and just as they slumbered, the blue notification light on my phone lit up, notifying me of a message. During this time, I keep my phone on silent to not disturb them.

“Get online and let’s chat in a bit!”

My fabulously talented cousin who is an esthetician and a professional make-up artist…on real-life Hollywood stars…like at awards shows like the Oscars…for money…was wanting to have a video chat with me to give me the requested tutorial on the list of products he’d recommended to me! (I’ve committed to taking better care of my skin and wearing more products, but more on that another time.) That night, I was having some brain issues (light-headed/dizzyness/spots), but when we connected on that phone and were dressing up my face, I felt brighter and happier! Heck, after the conversation, I felt beautiful even, because my face was wonderfully painted! Tesla had awoken during that call and was happily busying herself with my meager bits of makeup. I got to see his new addition to the family, the beautiful and furry Thor and hollered hello to his partner.

Another time, I saw this on my Instagram feed…

I’ve been hanging with these boys for years. They come up for a visit a couple of times a year and we get to hang out when we go to Lubbock for visits. It was night time, I’d put the girls down and they were sleeping, so I responded with this…

Satellite Party! (Malibu for me…American Honey in honor of my cousin on the left in the above picture…Crown Royal Black for my Brother, in his shot glass that I bought him in Costa Rica that lives at our home—I didn’t actually take their shots. I’m saving them for when they come visit.)

“Where are you online? Get your webcam ready and let’s do this!”

Cheers! Oh but wait, another buddy showed up on their end…

And then our favorite San Diego gal had seen the images and texted me this…

In those ten minutes, we were all giggling, laughing, telling jokes, taking shots, toasting and you know…being social.

I couldn’t wait for Don to get home so I could tell him all about it. He said it best, “This is what social media is really about.” You know what, it is! There are wonderful causes to support, that can unite and divide equally. But this…video chatting with some loved ones in other time zones, in other parts of the world, it’s what connects us. All of the crappy snark, political comments, self-loathing, you know, the stuff that mucks up my social media feeds (thank God for the hide features on those things so I can respectfully remove myself from the negative without completely deleting) is not what it is about. If I want depressing, then I just go to the news site.

Having a quick date from far away just to see live-motion, hearing the words, simultaneously seeing the facial expressions…you know all that non-verbal communication…is awesome! Adding video chats with my faraway (and not-so-faraway) loves to my list of weekly to-do’s.

How do you all stay in touch?

2010 Birthday Wishes: Revised

Thursday, May 20, 2010

For smiles and giggles, I thought I would take the time to put together a birthday wish list of things I'd like to have or dream of having. Of course, I'm beyond blessed to be able to celebrate it with lots of friends and family over the whole entire month of June, especially a very SPECIAL weekend in Austin that starts on Thursday and finishes up Sunday night. That particular weekend will be filled with, but not limited to: 70s party bus, party barge, brunch, game night, photographing a bridal session, a run along Town Lake, and who knows what else. I'm too ecstatic to have my parents and siblings in attendance, as well as my mother-in-law, a sprinkling of cousins, out of state friends from California, Arizona, and Oklahoma, as well as in-state friends traveling from Dallas and Lubbock! Talk about truly blessed indeed. Anyway, I still made a wish list of bigger items, but of course, these are just for dreaming. Maybe someday the dream will be a reality. You should be able to click the picture for more information, but I'm going to detail it out here now.

  1. TIGI Curling Iron - I really like my current curling iron, so I don't need to replace it, BUT this little guy was pretty darn spectacular. On my recent trip, I didn't pack a curling iron, just a flat iron. Well, my friend let me borrow hers and wow, did it knock my socks off. For $24.99 at Ulta, that's a great price!
  2. Canon 5D Mark II (Body Only) - But Bianca, you already have a camera. You're right, I do! I love it. My little silver bullet has been a working machine. But someday I want to upgrade body styles. I'm going to stay in the Canon family, but I don't really want to make the ginormous leap to a 7D or 9D (when it comes out). This guy feels good in my hands and is somewhat familiar to me. Because I already have lenses, I just need a body for now. However, what I don't have is an extra $2399 laying around to pick it up at Amazon. :)
  3. HTC EVO - I must ask myself, am I really ready for a full Smartphone? My current phone is pretty snazzy and does most of what I need it to do, but I would love for it to do more. Queue multi-tasking smart phone fools! I want something that takes crisp photos, HD videos, gets email, integrates my calendar(s), tells time, connects to my various nooks on the internets, and has a nifty kickstand just to show off. This little baby has all of that. Love it! It is $199, but there's some rebate attached and that's for new service w/ a 2 year agreement. I have NO IDEA what it'll really cost me, but you can bet I'm going to run to Best Buy to find out.
  4. Shootsac with cover - Yes, yes, yes, I know I had a tutorial for one that i made myself. You know what, that little guy has done a darn good job for me. BUT, it is no Shootsac. I would like a bit more space, yes and the flexibility to dress it up and down. Currently, my bag is quite a bit "louder" than I need it to be in some cases. $209 at Amazon for the bag and cover.
  5. Vapur Bottle - My friend introduced me to these bottles and the concept is INCREDIBLE. I like how it can tuck away nicely until I'm ready for use. I can't tell you how handy this would've been when Mari was smaller. I'm tempted to splurge on the Family Pack and gift a couple to my mother who seems to NEVER be without a water bottle, but if she is, she's quick to find one. She doesn't particularly like the other reusable bottles we've gotten her because they are too bulky and she forgets them at home. This bottle would fit nicely in her purse! $24.95 for the Family Pack or $8.95 on the site.
  6. Starbucks Grande Acrylic Travel Tumbler - This is similar to my Tervis Tumbler, but different. I loves me some sbux. I know, I know, don't judge! You like it too! The very best thing about this is the straw that stays put! How awesome is that? I don't necessarily agree with the price. For $26.95, it'll take me a few drinks to get my money's worth. Although, at my local sbux, it is slightly cheaper, so I need to investigate further to figure out what's going on. EDIT: It is MUCH cheaper at the local store. Only $11.95 to be exact. INSANE. Yes, I've already fulfilled this one.
6a. Kate Spade Earrings - I fell in love with this amazing baubles and you know how I love me some jewelry! I don't really own anything in this color, but wouldn't they be an amazing accent piece? Love them! $55 at Kate Spade.com and if I join their mailing list I get 15% off my first order and there is free shipping! yeehaw!
  7. Flip Micro SD - This is a digital video camera only. But, it records in hi-def and super fast plug and play make it a dream for snapping a quick video, uploading it to our designated channel, then sharing it with friends and family. We currently own a video camera and it never fails that we neglect to download the footage and share it. Just doesn't happen. Lame, I know. Totally lame. But this little gadget is awesome. However, if I happen to get the HTC or the Canon, I don't know if I'd use this as often as I think I would.
  8. Canon 85mm f/1.2L II lens - This is the prime lens that I've coveted the most of the other prime lenses. I've wanted this lens since before I really knew what all of those numbers after "Canon" meant. Ye of the red fabulous ring around the edge, oh how you make me swoon. Someday I will have this baby. I don't know when, but I will fa' sho'! Right now, through sometime in July, Canon is running a slight rebate program, so this len is on sale for $1869 through B & H photo. Good stuff!
In case you couldn't tell, I like gadgetry. (cough....cough...UNDERSTATEMENT....cough...cough) Some of these are totally far fetched and that's ok. If I get a gift, it'd be awesome just for someone to think of me. I also like it when someone gives me a gift by paying it forward, a la donating money/time to charity in my name. Tiny happies always make me giddy. I've been given SBUX gift cards and I will hide them in my stack of blank index cards only to discover them throughout the year and gleefully squeal when I discover them. Always good stuff! Still, one of the best gifts that I have seen someone request are handwritten letters from their loved ones. She opened them throughout the year as little surprises. Not cards, but letters sharing a favorite memory or what have you. Isn't that nifty? Regardless, only 12 more days until June. Where did the time go? Whoa!

What are some of the things YOU'D put on your wishlist?

PSA: Bathroom Texting

Sunday, April 4, 2010

I honestly can't believe I'm going to share this story with you all. However, I feel it needs to be shared so you can learn from my mistakes and hopefully, you can lock in a helpful reference tip should you ever need it. Anyway, here it goes...

Good Friday was amazing because all of us were going to have half a day to enjoy with one another. I woke up early to meet a friend for coffee so Don and Mari could sleep in. The plan was for me to pick them up on my way back and we were all going to go watch How to Train Your Dragon at Studio Movie Grill for lunch. I made it home and picked them. I was caught off guard by a dozen beautiful fire and ice roses happily perched on the dining room table with a note attached. You see, April 2, 2003 is when Don and I went on our first date. These were flowers from Mari and Guapo. I, being a mess of emotions, was so overcome, I giddily boo-hooed to the car. I swear, Mari is going to grow up thinking her mom is just a crying machine.

Anyway, we sped off to SMG and that's when the caffeine kicked in. I knew I probably should have made time to go at home, but I didn't want to be late. Instead, I held it and I nearly left my credit card at the counter with the gal. The entire walk up, I was doing a revved up ants-in-my-pants dance. I'm certain that gal thought I was on crack by my jerks and twitches, not to mention my 1000 mile an hour conversation. (BTW, Mandi, that was some awesome caffeine!) We ran into the theater and I bolted off to the bathroom. I vaguely remember muttering something about water to Don and just to order. I made it! While sitting there, I had to text Primo that we'd made it on time. (They were in the theater next door watching Clash of the Titans.) I also sent my folks a text letting them know where we were and when they could expect us, since they were driving in to watch Mari while we went East to shoot a wedding. I clicked send and put the phone on my knee. I reached over for the toilet paper and the super charged caffeine in my body made me vigorously shake my knee, which bounced the phone off, sent it flying and instead of locking my knees shut, I leaned forward, as if to dive for it and I missed the phone and it tumbled head first into the porcelain, settling comfortably in my own urine. I rolled my eyes, muttered a grumbled "gross," while reaching for it. (don't judge me, you would've done the same thing!) I wrapped it like a mummy with the toilet paper and went to wash my hands. I also put on some anti-bacterial and did the same for my phone. Then, everything was placed under the ridiculously powered dryer. I reminded myself, don't turn off the phone, don't turn off the phone, as I took out the battery and dried it off. Yes, folks, that turned off the phone. IDIOT! Sure enough, the screen had been compromised. I could make calls, I just didn't know who I was calling and forget about texts! All gone, everything.

I headed back into the theater and sat there bouncing and jiggling until I couldn't take it any more. I kissed Don and Mari goodbye and headed over to the Sprint store. I needed a new phone ASAP, because no way were we going to be 100+ miles away without me having a phone. After some negotiating, an added line, with a new phone, I walked out and had a working phone, visibly upset about the whole ordeal. I took a deep breath and walked back to the theater to watch the last 20 minutes. Mari wasn't really taken with the movie. It seemed cute enough, but I think she would have enjoyed Alice more.

When we were home, I buried my old phone in rice and tucked the business card with the new number on it to mark it like a gravestone. We were gone the remainder of that day and returned at midnight on Saturday. I pulled the phone out from the rice grave and what do you know, it powered on fine and the screen worked! Thanks Sam for the rice tip. I really DOES pull out the moisture. Now, I get to head back to Sprint to return the new phone (which I'd grown quite fond of) and try to cancel the line we added. Next time, I'm going to leave the phone in my purse when I'm that jacked on coffee.

Fun new tool

For people like me who'd rather digitally scrapbook (despite owning a ridicuolous amount of REAL scrapbooking things), I came upon this neat-o tool by Scrapblog. Best of all, it's free! This is what I made:
